Academy.
The Academy opened in Copenhagen in 1988 as the first school outside
of Japan and the first place in the West where it was possible to study
butoh for more than a few weeks at a time. Known for its free approach to
dance/movement, creating possibilities for the dancers to place themselves
in the centre of their creativity, it soon became a magnet for dancers,
actors and other artists from many countries. In 1997 the Academy moved
to the countryside in Tenerife Spain. After relocating to the Spanish
peninsula in 2007, the school has now settled in Sevilla. Since 1988 more
than 350 participants have attended the annual 7 months workshops.
Butoh is a concept of dance/movement, about placing oneself as a
performer in the now, where everything is, to be able to manipulate
the physical body and consciously manipulate the energy that moves
and surrounds it. As a result, when the performer moves, it is something
more than the individual moving. Butoh is ultimately about being
present: the dancer placing himself where he has what could be called
a free body, becoming a space of controlled energy and transformations.
When human beings dream, they are multi-dimensional and extremely
creative: through the disciplines at the Academy, the
dancer can learn to allow this state of mind to be constant and
ever-present so that it can be accessed at will rather than be experienced
as random enlightenment.
