The Academy opened in Copenhagen in 1989 as the first school outside of Japan and the first place in the West where it was possible to study Butoh for more than a few weeks at a time.
Known for its free approach to dance/movement, creating possibilities for the dancers to place themselves in the center of their own creativity, it soon became a magnet for dancers, actors and other artists from many countries.
In 1997 the Academy moved to the countryside in Tenerife, Spain. After relocating to the Spanish peninsula in 2007, the school has recently transferred all activities to Copenhagen. Since 1989 more than 350 participants have attended the annual seven-month workshops.
The ongoing investigation and vision to open up the concept of Butoh, fusing the powerful techniques and training as well as the philosophy with other styles of performing, have become ever more prominent at the Academy since its opening.
